I think we all grasp how vital education is, and we even grasp how vital understanding of the resources is, but even this client had me question. Do we really understand the depth and the value of what we offer? She came into the center for the verification of a positive pregnancy test and a confirmation of a viable pregnancy in her uterus; her ultrasound appointment was scheduled for today as well. Her abortion appointment with the abortion provider was scheduled for three days from now. As we sat and talked, I asked her what the fear behind her decision was. She stated very plainly that she could not afford any medical bills at this time, she was struggling financially, and had no way to pay for a provider, prenatal care, or any other medical expenses surrounding a pregnancy. I asked her if she knew that New Mexico covered every pregnant woman and child in our state. She looked at me surprised and asked me if that was true. When I informed her it was, she pulled out her cell phone and right then and there she stated the only reason she was contemplating an abortion was for financial circumstances, and she had been distraught finding out she thought she was pregnant. I implore you to hear the story and not get caught up in whether or not you agree with our state's use of your tax dollars to pay for a woman's prenatal care and delivery. I literally had somebody jump me for that one time. They were so caught up in the story until they got stuck on the detail within the story of our government covering medical expenses. It doesn’t matter if our government covers medical expenses in the story. It is a simple fact that they do. Turning Point’s greatest goal is to share factual information. This woman was distraught. Our role is to give her factual information to help her navigate despair and see hope in her future. You provide that when you partner with us to impact lives.
